Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

Air conditioners and heat pumps can be found in the same appliance if you know where to look. If you are looking for a cost effective appliance that you can use all year long then you need to find an air conditioner that also contains a heat pump. This means that in the summer you can use the air conditioning component to cool your room and then during the fall and winter you can change the setting so that your appliance now heats your room. In most cases both the combination air conditioner and the heat pump will be installed so that it runs through your furnace duct work.

It is important that you know how to tell the difference between the air conditioner and the heat pump. When you have it installed in your home you should make sure that you get a detailed description of what is being installed and how it works. If your air conditioner is installed on the outside of the house then the part that is on the ground more than likely be the air conditioner. If part of the appliance is higher up on a stand then it will be the heat pump. You should receive a manual with your appliance after it has been installed that will tell you what each part is.

After your air conditioner and heat pump combination has been installed on the outside of your house, a thermostat will also be installed inside that will allow you to control everything from the comfort of your home.  For the air conditioner the thermostat will say cool and for the heat there will be a switch that allows you to turn your heat on. When having our air conditioning on, it is recommended that you close the vents going toward your basement so that all the cool air will blow upstairs, cooling your entire house. When you turn the heat on you can once again open up the vents.
